Questions about Arithmetic

A 1:
If the sum of 3 consecutive integers is less than 75, what is the greatest possible value of the smallest of the three integers?

A 2:
If 2<x<4 and 3<y<7, what is the largest integer value of x+y?

A 3:

What is the smallest number that is divisible by both 34 and 35?

Answer  1:
Let the numbers be: n, n+1 , n+2. Then
n+ (n+1)+(n+2)+(n+3)=3n+3
Now by the given condition:
3n+3<75⇒3n<72⇒n<24
The most n can be is 23.
Now try three consecutive numbers whose sum is less than 75.
So, the numbers must be 23,24,25
Answer is 23.

Answer 2:
If x and y are integers, the largest value is 3+6=9. However, although x+y is to be an integer, neither x nor y must be. If x=3.8 and y=6.2, then x+y=10
So answer=10

Answer 3:
You are being asked for the LCM (least common multiple) of 34 and 35.
So the LCM of the numbers is 34×35=1190

B.    0.6%
C.     6%
D.    60%
E.     6000%

2:
If 1 micron=10,000 angstroms, then 100 angstroms is what percent of 10 microns?
A.    0.0001%
B.    0.001%
C.     0.01%
D.    0.1%
E.     1%

Answer1:
10% of 20% of 30% = .10 ×.20×.30=0.006=0.6 %  (B)

Answer2:
1 micron=10,000 angstroms
10 micron=100,000 angstroms,  then,
Dividing both sides by 1000 gives
100 angstroms=  1/1000(10 microns ) and

                        1/1000=0.001=0.1%

B 2:
In the meat department of a supermarket, 100 pounds of chopped meat was divided into packages, each of which weighed 4/7 pound. How many packages were there?

B 3:
In a jar, half of the marbles are red, ¼ are white, and 1/5 are blue. What fraction of the marbles are neither red, white, nor blue?

Answer1:
There are 4/7 ×350 =200 sophomore girls.
Of those, 7/8 ×200 play on a team. Then, 200-175=25 does not play on a team.
Answer2:
100÷  4/7= 100 ×   7/4=175
Answer3:
The red, white and blue marbles constitute
(1/2)+(1/4)+(1/5)=19/20
Of the total, so
1-(19/20)=1/20
1/20 of the marbles are neither red, white, nor blue.

Important points Chapter 2 book 1

Logical statements are also called propositions
Negation is unairy operation.
Conditional is equivalent to contrapositive.
Converse is equivalent to inverse.
Tautology means ⇾always true.
Absurdity ⇾ always false.
Contingency ⇾either true or false.

MCQ:
(p⇾q) ⇾(∼q⇾∼p) is:
a)    Tautology
b)   Absurdity
c)    Contingency
d)   None of these

Don’t draw the table to check it. You are not provided much time to draw a table for this type of MCQs. First check the conditions carefully.
As conditional is equivalent to contrapositive so it is a tautology. (a)

Residue classes:
In residue class 4:
1)   0 is identity.
2)   3 is the inverse of 1.
3)   2 is the inverse of 2.
4)   1 is the inverse of 3.
Same is in the case of other residue classes depending upon the class.
